Introduction

Terracon Ecotech, in collaboration with the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), was actively engaged in a project focused on the construction of two offshore container berths and the development of a container terminal in bustling Mumbai Harbour. Recognizing the potential environmental impact, the project fell under Category A, necessitating a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study. Category A projects required environmental approval and did not undergo the screening procedure.

Project Description

The Mumbai Harbour project holds significant economic benefits, contributing to increased EXIM trade and providing enhanced facilities for industries in Mumbai and Maharashtra. By expanding the port’s capabilities, the project aims to alleviate the transportation load on other modes of transport, fostering economic growth and sustainability.

Terracon Ecotech’s role encompasses a holistic approach, from impact assessment to clearance procurement, ensuring responsible and eco-friendly port development. Terracon Ecotech spearheads the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study, meticulously assessing the potential environmental impacts of the offshore container berths and terminal development. The team ensures a thorough understanding of the project’s implications, paving the way for effective mitigation strategies.

The team prepared a detailed Environmental Management Plan (EMP) report. This plan served as a strategic roadmap for implementing mitigative measures efficiently, ensuring sustainable practices, and minimizing adverse effects on the surrounding ecosystem. The team takes charge of the critical process of obtaining prior Environmental clearance under the EIA notification of 2006. Additionally, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance under the CRZ notification of 2011 is secured. Terracon Ecotech’s expertise ensures adherence to regulatory standards and compliance with environmental norms.
